I am a Feminist

Muktasree Chakma Sathi:

I am a feminist, that is why I talk for the powerless.

I am a feminist, that is why I work for and with women.

I am a feminist, that is why

I understand that a patriarchal society not only makes women powerless

but also puts a tremendous burden on men.

I am a feminist that is why

I want men to be free from that,

Free from being the ONLY bread winner,

Free from acting macho and strong when they need a hug.

I am a feminist, that is why

I want men to be allowed to express their feelings

and to not feel ashamed when they cry.

I am a feminist, that is why I am strong, I am a fighter- I am a survivor.

I am a feminist, that is why I talk against war and I demand peace.

I am a feminist that is why I want men to be human.

I am a feminist, that is why I value nature and respect Mother Earth.

I am a feminist, that is why

I understand we need to be united in every possible way,

Because together we stand, divided we fall.

I am a feminist, that is why

I don’t care how you label me,

Because I know your struggle and mine are the same,

And I know that you are yet to understand that.

I am a feminist, that is why

I understand when you say that you are all for “women’s freedom”

but you are NOT a feminist.

After all, I am a feminist.

And I am pro-choice and I respect your opinion.

I am a feminist, that is why

I know no preacher, no traditional or political leader – no one

Has the right to bar me from my freedom, my happiness, my access

-In the name of protection,

-In the name of tradition,

– In the name of religion.

I am a feminist that is why

I don’t remain silent when you belittle me.

I am a feminist that is why I want you to respect my struggle

and acknowledge my sufferings,

Or don’t. Don’t do any of this.

Just simply realise that women are humans.

Women have the same rights as you do.

The powerless have the same rights as the privileged.

We all have dreams, we all have hope,

We all love, we all feel sad.

We all get hurt when we’re bullied, beaten.

We all feel insecure when somebody threatens us.

We are all people and we all are same.

I know this because I am a feminist.
