Nobel peace prize awarded to Iranian activist Nargis Mohammadi

WC Desk:

Iranian women’s rights campaigner Nargis Mohammadi was named as the recipient of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday ‘for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.’

From Team Women Chapter, we would like to express our heartiest congratulations to Nargis Mohammadi. We hope there will be freedom, or Azaadi in Iran soon.

Born in 1972, Mohammadi began her journey as a human rights activist in the late 1990s. Her commitment to social justice was ignited during her college years, where she actively participated in student movements fighting for gender equality and equal access to education. This early exposure to activism played a crucial role in shaping her future endeavors.

Mohammadi has consistently fought for women’s rights in Iran, where gender inequality is deeply entrenched. She has actively worked towards raising awareness of issues such as child marriages, domestic violence, and discriminatory laws against women. Despite facing harassment and imprisonment, Mohammadi has remained steadfast in her efforts to empower women and challenge the oppressive structures in her society. She is serving multiple sentences in Tehran’s Evin prison amounting to about 12 years’ imprisonment, according to the rights organisation Front Line Defenders. Charges against her include spreading propaganda against the state, a charge commonly used to suppress activists worldwide.

Nargis Mohammadi’s courage and achievements have not gone unnoticed. She has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Alexander Langer Foundation Award, the Per Anger Prize, and the City of Bordeaux Medal. These accolades reflect the global recognition of her courageous work and the impact she has made in advocating for human rights.
